PUA and Being Authentic

by Penfold Felixin Relationships / Dating    (submitted 2011-05-24)

PUA and pickup artists are becoming more and more mainstream. Many PUAs use canned routines. Many PUAs even try to manipulate women into liking them. This article is not about them. There is, however, a growing band of PUAs who aim to be more authentic and natural around women, striving to become genuinely fun men who women want to be around. This article is not about them either. Instead, I want to demonstrate how there always have been natural, authentic PUAs right from the beginning and to ask why they are so much less well-known than their more scripted colleagues (and friends).

As far as the mainstream media and popular culture goes, PUA came to light around 2005 with the publication of Neil Strauss's "The Game", a candid and insightful look at the subculture and characters therein. He followed up in 2007 with "The Rules of the Game", more of a DIY instruction manual than his first book on the subject, which, as the name suggests, took a fairly mechanistic approach to relating with women. Nevertheless, in his first book, despite finding personal success with the scripts and routine-based methods of his mentor, Mystery, he is careful to describe how he also sought out more natural pickup artists. The most prominent of these, then and today, are Zan Perrion and Wayne "Juggler" Elise.

Of the two, Neil Strauss is perhaps closer to Juggler, and he describes in "The Game", how they would playfully tease women in museums in actually a very natural and fun way. Juggler, as far as I know, was never attracted to the routines-based approach pioneered by Mystery. Instead he would persist in this more authentic "style" eventually forming a company called "Charisma Arts", which still helps men today. He has also appeared on TV in Britain, once on Ready Steady Cook, a light-hearted cooking competition, and also in his own Channel 4 documentary showing how men of all shapes and sizes can find love and romance.

Zan Perrion, on the other hand, currently runs his Ars Amorata course, which is an intense program covering deep personal issues in order to help you learn to become a "natural". Yes, according to Zan, naturals are made not born. A natural is someone with a particular mindset that Zan teaches and embodies, and that women just happen to love, though of course this might not be the only reason one might want to become a natural. The self-confidence, compassion and wisdom learned on the course allow you to better recognise the beauty in life in general, not just in women.
