While it can be an exciting time for people to meet someone special, there are some precautions that you should take before getting involved with someone online. A lot of these precautions can apply to regular offline dating but there are specific online dating tips.
Unfortunately not everyone online is honest about who they are or what they even want. Be careful to include enough information in your profile to interest people, but not too much that you would be an easy target. There is no need to ever send your address to anyone you meet online, so be extremely wary if they ask you for one. If you choose to exchange personal email addresses, you might consider opening a special email account just for online dating. Some e-mail spammers use these types of sites to gather e-mail addresses and send out spam to you and they may be able to access your contacts through your e-mail account. Be cautious when receiving e-mails from people you do not know. Check to see their profiles first, and if anything looks suspicious report them to the site or even the authorities if it seems that serious. That way, if your account is ever compromised, you will never have to worry about your friends and family being targeted.
When it comes to a personal phone number, it's your call, but it's recommended that you wait until your relationship is quite established. A lot of information can be gleaned from a personal telephone number - like your home address. All people like to think that everyone is good at heart but the truth of the matter is that some people are not safe and may begin stalking you.
Sending personal pictures to someone you have not yet met is also a cause for concern. There are people out there who will try and use your profile and any pictures that are attached to it to exploit you and possibly your family. Do you really want a stranger, who could be anyone, to have a picture of you? Never ever send nude photos over the internet. They can easily reach the general public; ask any celebrity who's had a photo scandal.
Most of the people who are out there online are truly searching for friendship and love, so don't despair that internet dating sites are just full of perverts and stalkers. As long as you are aware of how to keep yourself safe online, you should have no problem meeting wonderful, honest people online.
